Drake has donated $100 000 (N38.8 million) towards bail money for the Black Lives Matter protesters who have been arrested across America.
The violent protests were triggered by the death of George Floyd – an African American who died in hospital after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes.
Drake donated to the National Bail Out fund on Monday. The fund seeks to help pay the bonds of people arrested during the riots and mass looting.
The Canadian rapper shared a receipt for his $100 000 donation to the fund in his Instagram stories with his 67 million followers after fellow songwriter Mustafa the Poet urged him to exceed his own contribution of $400 (N155k), breitbart.com reported.
According to bet.com, another Canadian superstar The Weeknd also donated to the cause. He shared via Instagram that he’s donated $100,000 to the National Bail Out fund.
The Weeknd donated $200 000 to Colin Kaerpernick’s newly-launched legal defense initiative for Minneapolis protestors, Know Your Rights, and $200 000 to the Black Lives Matter movement, reports bet.com.
The National Bail Out fund describes itself as a “Black-led and Black-centered collective of abolitionist organizers, lawyers and activists building a community-based movement to support our folks and end systems of pretrial detention and ultimately mass incarceration”.
